Structural Dynamics
Dynamic design of engineering structures under natural, human or machine-induced dynamic alternating loads. Investigation, computational analysis and root cause analysis of structural dynamics problems and vibration phenomena of all kinds, including earthquake safety.
Earthquake Safety
When the earth releases tension: earthquakes are a natural hazard that place extraordinary stress on buildings. Inertial forces resulting from ground acceleration must be absorbed by the supporting structure. Earthquake-proof buildings and infrastructure primarily serve to protect people (direct danger, resp. guaranteeing assistance). Switzerland is also at risk from severe, albeit rare, earthquakes.
Dimensioning
Earthquake-proof construction is largely no longer a question of knowledge. Thanks to intensive research and extensive experience, suitable tools are now available that can be applied according to the problem at hand. Structures are analysed using methods ranging from greatly simplified static equivalent load methods to complex non-linear time history calculations.
Design
Consulting during the design phase is of great importance: professional structural and conceptual design of the supporting structure is the first and most important step in earthquake dimensioning. Important principles regarding cyclic and ductile load behaviour must also be observed during the execution phase, i.e. during detailed design and construction.
Earthquake Safety Assessment
The number of buildings at risk from seismic activity is high. Assessing earthquake safety (visual assessment, recalculation, measurement of relevant structural and soil parameters, etc.) and choosing a retrofitting strategy are often influenced by highly restrictive technical and economic conditions and, in cases of insufficient earthquake safety, require solutions tailored to the specific situation.
Case Studies
Both public and private building contractors are interested in detailed earthquake investigations. Computer-assisted structural analyses reveal weak points and promote technical understanding among all parties involved. The aim is to apply simple, practical protection or reinforcement systems, taking into account technical feasibility and economic viability.
Advice from Earthquake Specialists
Many years of experience, coupled with constantly updated specialist knowledge, are prerequisites for the specialist’s successful work in consulting, assessment, design and measurement activities.
